Creating sustainable strategic direction and relationships for programs to flourish

  • Against a backdrop of escalating environmental, ecological and climate crises, Ecojustice – Canada’s largest environmental law charity – needed to build greater integration between its programs, enhance its theory of change, and facilitate cohesion among teams to enable even greater organizational impact.

  • Mutatio used a highly participatory and engaged process to foster a culture of collaboration and innovation. Krystal and Victoria facilitated two multi-day offsites with the leadership team, creating a trust-filled environment where challenging conversations could be raised and addressed. From here, the team could navigate critical decisions required to concentrate efforts, identify key leverage points for programs, and map out an organizational-wide program strategy and the steps necessary for successful implementation.

  • Ecojustice needed a renewed Program Strategy to prioritize and amplify the impact of our work in using the power of the law. Krystal and Victoria's expertise in strategic planning, conflict transformation, and reconciliation was instrumental in integrating our program team's expertise in litigation, law reform and strategic communications to create a powerful roadmap for Ecojustice's future. Thanks to Mutatio's skilled facilitation, our Program Strategy articulates my vision as Executive Director and our organizational vision for systemic change to meet planetary deadlines.

Setting a strategic course to grow with purpose

  • Entre Nous Femmes Housing Society (ENFHS), a 35+ year charitable non-profit housing provider that serves women, single-parent families, and other equity-deserving communities, faced the challenge of needing to expand their housing capacity to meet growing demand and increase their impact while preserving resident well-being, building organizational capacity and their commitment to serve those most in need.

  • Mutatio worked closely with ENFHS’s Board, staff, and external stakeholders to refine the organization’s community of focus, crafted a compelling theory of change that connects affordable housing to their broader vision, established core values to guide the work into the future and defined strategic priorities that will enable ENFHS to double their housing units and the people they serve over the next five years.

  • Krystal's well-designed process and skillful facilitation created an open and inclusive environment, fostering meaningful discussions and consensus-building around our strategic goals and organizational values. As a result, we have a holistic and comprehensive strategic plan that has gained strong support within our organization, positions us for impactful growth and meets our mission to create more affordable homes in the communities we serve.

Driving clarity, collaboration and growth through engaged strategic planning

  • With rising costs for both individuals and government support systems, the Living Wage Campaign needed to map out its next phase of collaborative impact through strategic planning, to ensure each organization could see the part they play in creating a province where every worker can thrive.

  • Our highly-engaged process allowed for the contribution of a wide array of organizations - unions, businesses, funders and advocates - to identify critical societal, network, governance and organizational challenges and opportunities that will shape the future of the Living Wage Campaign. Mutatio brought these voices and ideas together in accessible and compelling language to align and inspire the broader campaign network to create a province where every worker can thrive.

  • The Living Wage campaign in BC has gone through a lot of change in recent years, with a variety of stakeholders invested in its future. We worked with Victoria and Krystal to develop a new three-year strategy for the Living Wage program. They developed a seamless process and expertly facilitated a series of sessions with key stakeholders to understand their needs and opinions on the future of Living Wage. Facilitating online can be challenging, but Victoria and Krystal did it with ease. Their process is very collaborative, and they encourage feedback and making improvements based on the feedback they’ve heard. I’m very proud of our final output, and to work together to build a province where workers can thrive.

Deepened understanding of the interconnections between climate change and financial resilience

  • While Vancity has an impressive track record of leading climate action and advancing equity through financial inclusion, poverty reduction, and community investment, the challenge they needed to press into was to better understand the intersections and interconnections between these two areas and how they each influence one another.

  • This work was grounded in listening to community. Through a series of community interviews, Mutatio consulted organizations and leaders working at the forefront of climate change and those advocating for equity to map the relationship between the two, uncover disproportionate impacts, and develop a set of recommendations to integrate into the work of the Credit Union in theory and practice.

  • Vancity hired Krystal to better understand how climate change and economic resilience are interconnected. Grounded in community-engaged research, Krystal brought together multiple voices across the system to frame the conversation from the perspective of those most affected. Through this work, Krystal developed a valuable systems map to illuminate the ways in which social, economic, and environmental justice are highly interrelated. This work has provided rich insight for our team, unlocking a deeper understanding of the problems we’re trying to solve, and more importantly, uncovering opportunities for us to affect change across the system.
